What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

If you’re experiencing pain, swelling, or damage to a tooth, don’t wait and hope it goes away. Prompt treatment often means the difference between saving a tooth and losing it. We provide urgent care for:

  • Severe toothaches — persistent or throbbing pain that over-the-counter medicine won’t touch
  • Knocked-out teeth — time matters; a tooth treated within the hour has the best chance of being saved
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth — from sports injuries, falls, or biting down on something hard
  • Lost or broken crowns and fillings — exposed teeth are sensitive and vulnerable to further damage
  • Dental abscesses and infections — swelling, fever, or a bad taste in your mouth can signal a serious infection that needs immediate attention
  • Broken dentures or partials — we’ll help restore your smile and your comfort
  • Soft tissue injuries — cuts or trauma to the gums, lips, cheeks, or tongue
  • Painful or swollen gums — which may indicate infection or advanced gum disease

Not sure if it’s an emergency? Call us at (770) 867-3275. Our friendly team will listen to your symptoms, help you decide what to do next, and get you on the schedule if you need to be seen.

What to Do Before You Reach Our Office

A few simple steps can protect your tooth and ease your pain until we can see you:

Knocked-out tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown (the white part), never the root. Gently rinse it with water — don’t scrub. If possible, place it back in the socket, or keep it in a cup of milk. Then call us right away.

Toothache: Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for swelling. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums.

Broken or chipped tooth: Save any pieces you can find, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress to reduce swelling.

Lost crown or filling: Keep the crown if you have it, and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until we can reattach or replace it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dental Care

Do you accept same-day emergency appointments?

Yes! We make every effort to see emergency patients the same day they call. Our office opens at 7:00 AM most weekdays, so contact us as early as possible at (770) 867-3275 and we’ll get you in as quickly as we can.

What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

Act fast — a knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if it’s treated within 30 to 60 minutes. Pick the tooth up by the crown, rinse it gently, and either place it back in the socket or store it in milk. Then call our office immediately.

Should I go to the emergency room for a toothache?

In most cases, a dentist is the right choice — hospital ERs typically can’t provide dental treatment beyond pain medication and antibiotics. However, if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, significant facial swelling, or uncontrolled bleeding, go to the nearest emergency room first.

How much does emergency dental care cost?

Costs vary depending on the treatment you need, from a simple filling to a root canal or extraction. Our team will explain your treatment options and costs before we begin, help you understand your insurance benefits, and share payment options like Sunbit, which lets you split your bill into monthly payments for up to 72 months.

Do you see new patients for dental emergencies?

Absolutely. You don’t have to be an existing patient to receive emergency care at Benner and Townsend Dentistry. We welcome new patients — and once you’ve visited, we think you’ll want to make us your dental home.

Can a cracked tooth wait until my next regular checkup?

We don’t recommend it. Even a small crack can deepen, allowing bacteria to reach the inner tooth and cause infection. The sooner a cracked tooth is treated, the simpler (and less expensive) the fix usually is.

What if I’m anxious about emergency dental treatment?

You’re not alone — and you’re in good hands. Many of our most loyal patients are former “scaredy cats.” Our doctors offer sedation options to help you stay calm and comfortable, and our team will move at your pace every step of the way.

Pain Can’t Wait — And Neither Should You

If you or a family member is dealing with a dental emergency in Winder, Barrow County, or the surrounding communities, don’t tough it out. Call Benner and Townsend Dentistry or request your visit online, and let our team take care of you like family.
